I’m not going to lie, I enjoyed reading the bad guy beat up Sharpe in the beginning of the book。 Sharpe is always winning fights (he’s kind of a gary stu) so him losing is such a breath of fresh air。 It’s why I love Harper so much。 First book we met him in and he had Sharpe struggling。 Still, this was your typical Sharpe book。 War on foreign land check, incompetent officers check, villains to defeat check, damsel in distress check, epic battle at the end check。 It’s starting to feel formulaic。 I I’m not going to lie, I enjoyed reading the bad guy beat up Sharpe in the beginning of the book。 Sharpe is always winning fights (he’s kind of a gary stu) so him losing is such a breath of fresh air。 It’s why I love Harper so much。 First book we met him in and he had Sharpe struggling。 Still, this was your typical Sharpe book。 War on foreign land check, incompetent officers check, villains to defeat check, damsel in distress check, epic battle at the end check。 It’s starting to feel formulaic。 I’m chasing the high Sharpe’s Rifles gave me and nothing so far is yet to get there。ALSO! When are we changing settings?! We were in India for the first four, at sea for the fifth but since book six we’ve been in the Iberian Peninsula and we’ll still be there in the next book?! Bring the colonizers to Africa!I still utterly despise the romance in this series。 。。。more

Standard issue Sharpe。 There's a girl, an external bad guy (beyond just "the French") and and internal bad guy, but it all works out in the end, with lots of punch-ups and firefights on the way。 Should like a criticism but it's really not, this is exactly what I want from Sharpe, and it was delivered。 Standard issue Sharpe。 There's a girl, an external bad guy (beyond just "the French") and and internal bad guy, but it all works out in the end, with lots of punch-ups and firefights on the way。 Should like a criticism but it's really not, this is exactly what I want from Sharpe, and it was delivered。 。。。more

Amazingly it’s been ten years since I last read a Sharpe novel in which time I’ve read the whole of the Last Kingdom/Warrior Chronicles, the Grail Quest series including Azincourt and 1356, two-thirds of the Warlord Chronicles and Fools and Mortals as well as Cornwell’s brilliant factual account of the battle of Waterloo, so, to return to Sharpe now feels not so much like reconnecting with an old friend but rather getting to spend some time with an older family member who has always been there b Amazingly it’s been ten years since I last read a Sharpe novel in which time I’ve read the whole of the Last Kingdom/Warrior Chronicles, the Grail Quest series including Azincourt and 1356, two-thirds of the Warlord Chronicles and Fools and Mortals as well as Cornwell’s brilliant factual account of the battle of Waterloo, so, to return to Sharpe now feels not so much like reconnecting with an old friend but rather getting to spend some time with an older family member who has always been there but for the past few years has been upstaged by the younger, noisier members of the family。A great novel which blends battle, personal vendetta, criminal investigation and the most cups of tea ever drunk in a single novel (I may have made that last one up but it certainly feels like it) in a seamless adventure story。I feel a bit of a Sharpe binge coming on。 。。。more

Audio version narrated by Patrick Tull。 Different narrator, but Patrick Tull does a fine job after 10 minutes of getting used to it not being Fredrick Davidson。 The combined presentation of Ferragus by Cornwell and Tull was really well done。

An enjoyable book, but very much of the same cut as Cornwell's other Sharpe books - incompetent British commanders who don't listen to Sharpe, ferocious and evil turncoats who show their true colours and face summary justice by Brevet Cpt。 Sharpe in due course, etc。 etc。 An enjoyable book, but very much of the same cut as Cornwell's other Sharpe books - incompetent British commanders who don't listen to Sharpe, ferocious and evil turncoats who show their true colours and face summary justice by Brevet Cpt。 Sharpe in due course, etc。 etc。 。。。more

Sharon's Escape has kept my interest from beginning to end and has taught me something of the Peninsula War and the Lines of Torres Vedras。 I also leant who Picton was (he has a town in New Zealand named after him)。I thought that the English governess from the 1800s would not have slept with Sharpe。 A woman in her position had too much to lose。I used to watch Sharpe's Rifles tv series with Sean Bean who was the ideal actor for the part of Sharpe。 When reading the story, Sean Bean always comes to Sharon's Escape has kept my interest from beginning to end and has taught me something of the Peninsula War and the Lines of Torres Vedras。 I also leant who Picton was (he has a town in New Zealand named after him)。I thought that the English governess from the 1800s would not have slept with Sharpe。 A woman in her position had too much to lose。I used to watch Sharpe's Rifles tv series with Sean Bean who was the ideal actor for the part of Sharpe。 When reading the story, Sean Bean always comes to mind。 。。。more

Another thrilling adventure with Sharpe。 I must say that this one took a lot of setting up on the front half, but once Sharpe and his companions found themselves trapped, the action does not let up until the end, and it's a very fun read。 Another thrilling adventure with Sharpe。 I must say that this one took a lot of setting up on the front half, but once Sharpe and his companions found themselves trapped, the action does not let up until the end, and it's a very fun read。 。。。more
